Laing’s big performance propels UNBC MBB to split against Alberta

Todd Jordan needed a jolt from his starting lineup and found lightning in a bottle.

The head coach for the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team put local product Tyrell Laing into the starting lineup on Saturday against the Alberta Golden Bears and he proved to be the x-factor in an 81-70 victory.

Laing posted a career-high 25 points, going 7-for-11 on three-point attempts in 36 minutes of action.

The move led to a more balanced attack from the T-Wolves who received 14-points each from James Agyeman and Vova Pluzhnikov who came off the bench.

This erased a hard-fought 76-68 loss at the hands of the Golden Bears on Friday, which saw Brody Clarke go off for 28 points.

Jovan Leamy was the leading scorer for UNBC in defeat with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The trip to Edmonton wasn’t so lucky for the women’s basketball team who dropped a pair of decisions to the Pandas by scores of 86-72 (Friday) and 85-75 (Saturday).

Vasiliki Louka led the way offensively for UNBC in the back-half of the double dip posting 23 points while Emma Kary had a game-high 29 off the bench for Alberta.

On Friday, Madison Landry posted 22 points in the 37 minutes of action.

The Pandas were led by Vanessa Wild also with 22.

Both losses drop UNBC to 9-7 on the season, good enough for eight place in the Canada West women’s conference while the men improve to 8-8 and sit ninth.

A trip to Vancouver is on tap for the T-Wolves next weekend when they tackle the UBC Thunderbirds.
