BEAUDRY BIATHLON:

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George placed in the upper middle of the field at a World Cup biathlon race Thursday in Antholz-Anterselva, Italy.

The 24-year-old Beaudry finished 40th out of 94 in the women’s 7.5 km sprint.

She was third of four Canadians.

By ending up in the top 60, Beaudry qualifies for the 10 km pursuit on Saturday.


WHL: (PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS)

The Prince George Cougars start a five-game road trip with three games this weekend in Alberta: tonight at the (21-19-3-1) Calgary Hitmen, Saturday at the (27-14-2-1) Red Deer Rebels and Sunday at the (25-14-4-4) Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Hitmen hold down the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

The Oil Kings lead the Central Division by just a point over the Rebels and by two points over the (25-13-4-4) Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Cougars also visit Kamloops Feb 1st and Vancouver Feb. 2nd before hosting Vancouver on Feb. 5th and 6th.

Prince George has dropped its last four.

The 16-24-3-2 Cougars are tied with the (17-24-2-1) Kamloops Blazers for last in the Western Conference, two points behind the (17-21-4-1) Seattle Thunderbirds, who hold down the second and final wild-card playoff spot.

Prince George is also five points behind the (19-22-3-1) Kelowna Rockets, who are third in the B.C. Division.

CHL TOP PROSPECTS GAME:

PG Cougars goalie Taylor Gauthier allowed four goals on 16 shots in the 24th CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Red Deer.

Gauthier played the second half for Team Cherry in a 5-4 loss to Team Orr.


BCHL: (PG SPRUCE KINGS)

The Prince George Spruce Kings host the Coquitlam Express tonight and Saturday to start a four-game homestand.

The match-up is a possible playoff preview.

The 27-12-1-5 Spruce Kings (with just 13 games left) are second in the Mainland Division, five points behind the (32-12-1) Chilliwack Chiefs.

The (25-18-2-1) Express sit in third place, seven points behind Prince George.

 

BCMML: (CARIBOO COUGARS)

The Cariboo Cougars host the Thompson Blazers Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

The 16-5-5 Major Midget Cougars are in third place in the 11-team league, three points behind the (17-5-4-2) Vancouver North-East Chiefs and five back of the (20-4-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

 

BCMML: (CARIBOO COUGARS MINOR MIDGET)

The Cariboo Minor Midget Cougars visit the first place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds tonight, Saturday and Sunday in , Abbotsford.

The Cariboo 15-year-olds are 11-5-1-4 and in third place, two points behind the (14-3-1) Okanagan Rockets and six points back of (16-4-1) Fraser Valley.


NHL:

The NHL All-Star Game is set for Saturday night in San Jose.

The Vancouver Canucks are represented by Elias Pettersson, who has 45 points, including 23 goals, in 40 games.

Regular season action will resume on Monday with a pair of games: Winnipeg at Philadelphia and New Jersey at Pittsburgh.

The Canucks are idle until Saturday, Feb. 2nd when they begin a four-game road trip at Colorado.

Vancouver, Dallas and Colorado are in a three-way tie for the two wild-card playoff spots, a point ahead of Anaheim, two in front of Arizona and three up on St. Louis and Edmonton.


CANADA WEST BASKETBALL: (UNBC TIMBERWOLVES)

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the UBC Thunderbirds for a doubleheader in Canada West basketball.

The women tip off this afternoon at 1:00 while the men play tonight at 7:00.

The rematch on Saturday go at 5:00 p.m. (women) and 7:00 p.m. (men).

The Timberwolves, with just four regular season games remaining, close at home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns February 1st and 2nd.

UNBC is 9-7 in the women’s standings (8th place out of 17 teams) and 8-8 in the men’s division (9th place).

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

UBC is 12-4 (women) and 15-1 (men).


NBA:

The Toronto Raptors visit the (27-20) Houston Rockets tonight.

The 36-14 Raptors are in a virtual tie with the (34-12) Milwaukee Bucks for the Eastern Conference lead.

Toronto forward Kawhi Leonard is among 10 players selected to start the NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 17 in Charlotte.

 

TENNIS:

#1 Novak Djokovic will play #2 Rafael Nadal in the men’s final at the Australian Open.

It will be their 53rd meeting on tour and 8th in a Grand Slam final.

Djokovic leads the head-to-head series 27-25 overall, while Nadal holds a 4-3 edge in major finals.

Both won their semis in straight sets.

The women’s final at the Australian open will feature (4) Naomi Osaka against (8) Petra Kvitova.


NFL:

The New England Patriots are 2 1/2 point favourites to beat the LA Rams in Super Bowl 53.

The game will kick off Sunday, February 3rd (3:30 p.m. PT) in Atlanta.
