Ice Oval pushes back hours, facing challenges due to the cold

From too warm to too cold, ice makers at the Prince George Ice Oval are braving the cold to keep the city’s premier skating facility open.

Ice Oval Society Member, Lyle Dickeson told My PG Now the chilly weather provides a different set of problems for ice makers.

“One of our biggest problems, when it’s this cold, is certainly with the equipment. You’re dealing with internal combustion engines and water, there are a lot of things that can go wrong for us in minus thirty weather.”

Opening times at the facility have also been pushed back as a result since it’s been so darn chilly in the Northern Capital.

“At this temperature, early in the mornings it can be pretty cold and only the hardiest have been out and we’ve actually decided to change our hours to noon during the weekdays and 11 AM on the weekends.”

Ice Oval staff are preparing for Valentine’s Day as well as other events taking place on the weekend.
