PARA NORDIC SKIING:

Mark Arendz of P.E.I captured his third medal at the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships in Prince George.

Arendz finished third in the Biathlon Men Sprint Standing to give him two bronze and a silver.

Canada has a total of five medals.

The other two are from Colin Cameron of Sudbury, Ontario, with a gold and a silver.

Racing resumes at 10:30 this morning at the Otway Nordic Centre.

118 men and women athletes from 19 countries are competing in four cross-country skiing and four biathlon events.

Canada is represented by 11 athletes and three guides, including three athletes from B.C.

The participants are grouped into three classes: sitting, standing, and visually impaired.


WHL: (PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS)

The Prince George Cougars have just 10 games left in their season (three against Kamloops, two each against Spokane, Portland and Victoria and one against Everett).

The Cougars, who have lost a club record 17 straight (0-13-0-1), visit Kamloops Friday and Everett Saturday.

Prince George is 0-5-0-1 since general manager Mark Lamb replaced Richard Matvichuk as head coach.

The Blazers are 6-0 this season against the Cougars.

The Silvertips beat the Cougars twice by a 4-1 score this week at CN Centre.

The 16-35-4-3 Cougars are last in the Western Conference, 10 points behind the (22-28-4-1) Blazers and 13 back of the (23-28-5-1) Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds hold down the final wild-card playoff spot.

Prince George is also 14 points behind the (24-29-4-1) Kelowna Rockets.

The Rockets are currently in a playoff spot by sitting third in the B.C. Division.

BCHL: (PG SPRUCE KINGS)

Two Prince George Spruce Kings are up for an individual BCHL award.

Layton Ahac is the Mainland Division nominee for top defenceman and Logan Neaton gets the Mainland nod for top goalie.

The Spruce Kings close out their regular season with back-to-back home games against the Chilliwack Chiefs Friday and Saturday.

The (42-13-1) Chiefs will finish first in the Mainland Division.

The 37-13-1-5 Spruce Kings are second in the overall BCHL standings with a team record 37 wins.

Prince George is five points behind Chilliwack.

Both teams have won 10 of their last 11 games.

The Spruce Kings will likely meet the (27-24-3-3) Coquitlam Express in the first round of the playoffs.

Coquitlam is third in the Mainland Division, five points ahead of the (26-26-2-1) Langley Rivermen with the Rivermen having just three games left.

 

BCMML: (CARIBOO COUGARS)

The Cariboo Cougars host the seventh place (15-14-3-2) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday afternoon at 4:00 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The 21-8-5 Major Midget Cougars are in 4th place in the 11-team league with six regular season games left.

Cariboo is two points behind the (23-10-1-2) Okanagan Rockets, and five back of both the (23-7-4-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs (25-7-1-1) and the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

 

NHL: (4 games Wednesday)


The Vancouver Canucks host the Arizona Coyotes tonight (the N.Y. Islanders Saturday and Anaheim Ducks Monday)

The (26-27-7) Canucks and Coyotes are both two points behind the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks who are tied for the final wild-card playoff spot.

Vancouver is also one point back of the Minnesota Wild and two points ahead of Anaheim.

Winnipeg and Calgary are the only Canadian NHL teams idle on an 11-game Thursday slate.

 

CURLING: (SCOTT TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS)

B.C. will play Manitoba this morning (5:30 a.m. PT) in a tie-breaker at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The winner advances to the Championship Pool.

Both teams finished tied for 4th in Pool A with a record of 4-3.

Alberta came first at 7-0 followed by Ontario and Northern Ontario at 5-2.

Wild Card topped Pool B at 6-1 followed by Saskatchewan and P.E.I. at 5-2 and Canada at 4-3.

Ontario beat B.C. 8-6 in the round robin today (Wednesday).

B.C. is represented by skip Sarah Wark of Abbotsford and her team that has two sisters (third Kristen Pilote and lead Jen Rusnell) and a coach (Rick Fewster) from Prince George.

(Fewster is Pilote’s and Rusnell’s dad)

The Wark team qualified after winning provincials in Quesnel.

CANADA WINTER GAMES:

Team B.C. has seven gold, one silver and nine bronze for a total of 17 medals entering competition today (Thursday) at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

B.C. is third behind Quebec (43 medals, including 14 gold) and Alberta (28, including 9 gold).

Ryan Elden of Quesnel has two medals; gold in the men’s biathlon 10 km individual pursuit and a bronze in the men’s 3×7.5 km team relay.

Katie Young of Quesnel is part of the B.C. ringette team that beat New Brunswick 4-3 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis.

Nine Prince George athletes are competing (four in speed skating, two in judo and one each in alpine skiing, snowboard and wheelchair basketball).

Joel Ewert of P.G. is part of the B.C. wheelchair basketball team that lost to Saskatchewan 58-50 in the consolation round.
