Spruce Kings, Bandits battle one last time for Junior A supremacy

To quote the late frontman of The Eagles Glen Frey, the Prince George Spruce Kings and the Brooks Bandits will take it to the limit one more time.

For the eighth time in the last three weeks, both rivals will faceoff, this time it is for the National Junior A Championship, which is being contested today at 2pm Pacific time from the Centennial Regional Arena.

Prince George has a 4-3 series lead heading into the matchup, which saw the Fred Page Cup champions claim its first ever Doyle Cup title on home ice a few weeks ago against the host Bandits in six games from the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

Spruce Kings forward Nick Poisson chatted with MYPGNOW ahead of the matchup.

“I think our hatred kind of came up through the Doyle Cup as they kind of picked their poison but the hostile crowd is something we kind of feed off of and it’s nice to be the most hated team in the tournament because all the fans know that you are good.”

“It’s a big motivator for some of our guys.”

Poisson scored one of the two Prince George goals in Saturday’s 2-1 semi-final victory against the Oakville Blades.

He has five goals in the tournament and explained how so many chances are coming to him.

“I am finding the right spots and kind of working at the net and I have been really determined around that area to find the loose pucks.”

MYPGNOW’s Brendan Pawliw is providing extensive coverage of the National Junior A Championship from Brooks, Alberta.
