The Canadian women’s biathlon team, that includes Megan Heinicke of Prince George, placed in the middle of the pack with an 11th place finish in a World Cup relay in Ruhpolding, Germany. The 26-year-old Heinicke, a two-time Olympian, enjoyed a solid day from start-to-finish to set the pace in her leg of the 4×6-kilometre loop. “The conditions were slow and super wet, but it was an awesome feeling to feel slow and still catch up to the other nations,” said Heinicke. The relay consists of each athlete skiing 6 kilometres with two bouts of shooting. The Czech Republic won the relay followed by Belarus and Germany.
–Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars has been named an alternate captain for Team Orr in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game January 22nd in St. Catharines, Ontario. Harkins leads the Cougars in scoring with 49 points (13g-36a) in 44 games.
–The PG Cougars are down to their final 28 regular season games which includes 14 at CN Centre. The 20-23-1 Cougars are third in the BC Division, a point ahead of Vancouver and the Giants have two games in hand. The Cougars start a four game homestand Friday and Saturday against Portland.
–The Prince George Spruce Kings have 18 regular season games remaining, including nine on home ice. The 18-18-0-4 Spruce Kings play their next five at the PG Coliseum starting tonight (Thursday) against Salmon Arm. They also entertain Victoria Saturday and Coquitlam Sunday. P.G. is 3rd in the BCHL Mainland Division. The Spruce Kings are riding a six-game losing streak.
–The 23-4-1 major midget leading Cariboo Cougars resume league play Saturday and Sunday at South Island against the 13-12-2 Royals.
–The Players Bench Bantam Tier 2 Cougars host a six team minor hockey tournament Friday to Sunday at the Kin Centre and Coliseum. The final will go at 2:15pm Sunday at Kin 2.
–The UNBC basketball teams host TRU of Kamloops Friday and Saturday night in their first Canada West league home games of 2015.
–The BC Long Track Speed-Skating Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval.
