Erickson named as Liberal Candidate up against incumbent Zimmer

Twice elected Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief and Harvard Law School graduate, Mavis Erickson has been named as the Federal Liberal Candidate in Prince George — Peace River — Northern Rockies.

Leading up to the announcement, Erickson has been practising law in Prince George.

In 2000, she worked for Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada as their Special Representative on the Protection of First Nations Women’s Rights. Additionally, Erickson has held prominent coordinator roles for the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, BC Ending Violence Association, Human Rights Watch, and the Highway of Tears Coordinator for Carrier Sekani Family Services.

In 1995, she was awarded the University of British Columbia’s Highest Achievement Award for Native People and the Law.

Erickson issued the following statement in a news release announcing her candidacy:

“As your Member of Parliament for Prince George – Peace River – Northern Rockies, I will ensure northern diversity and inclusion in decision making. We sit on a vast region of wealth that must serve the North and its people. The importance and power of linking Northern communities for economic and social change is integral to the continued development of healthy citizens and communities and my motivation to represent you in Ottawa.”

Erickson will be running against Conservative incumbent Bob Zimmer, Catharine Kendall of the Green Party, and Ron Valiant of the People’s Party of Canada.
