Prince George to take a stand against bullying during Pink Shirt Day

The issue of bullying will be brought to the forefront as Prince George will take part in Pink Shirt Day tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Canada-wide initiative began in 2007, after two high school students from Nova Scotia took action when a fellow student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

Bullying comes in many forms whether it’s online, through social media, at school or in the workplace.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Northern BC Executive Director Tim Bennett admits we have come a long way on the issue but there is still more work to be done.

“We still have work to do, and again, it’s important that we look at Pink Shirt Day not just as the only day we talk about bullying but as a reminder that we need to keep the conversation going.”

Bennett adds support from the business community continues to be tremendous.

“For example, we have a Pink Donut at Tim Horton’s, Pink Milkshakes at Carl’s Jr and Exit Prince George is donating 50% of sales for the day and the list continues.”

Bennett states mentoring is a proven solution for the kids being bullied as well as the bullies themselves.
