Prince George baseball product Jared Young isn`t surprised by the cancellation of the Minor League Baseball season.
Young played last season with the Chicago Cubs AA team the Tennessee Smokies and was trying to climb up to AAA this year.
He told MyPGNow.com they weren`t given any notice ahead of time.
“I found out just like most of you through social media and stuff kind of circulating basically saying that it’s cancelled but I saw that coming, it’s pretty unfortunate.”
When asked if he will be part of the Cubs 60-man player roster once the MLB season begins, Young stated it`s a longshot as 50 of those spots are taken.
“I saw the Cubs released 50 of the 60 guys and there weren’t a lot of shocks with those players and I know they have a few more to go. I am still down in Arizona staying in somewhat baseball shape and looking for some good news.”
Young added the cancellation puts a lot of players in an awkward spot.
“It’s one whole year where I am going to be another year older and I am going to be in relatively the same spot as I was last year and it’s frustrating but there are a lot worse things that could be happening to me right now and I have to just be thankful that I am healthy.”
“I am hoping there are some camps or something or maybe some sort of baseball that can be played like a fall league in Arizona or something, I don’t know but I hope something gets sorted out where we can play some baseball.”
During the pandemic, many of the parent Major League Baseball clubs have offered financial assistance to its minor league players get by with no games being played.
Young stated the Cubs have chipped in wherever possible.
“The Cubs are giving us what they call a living allowance, it’s just been a little bit of money to help with rent and stuff like that. I haven’t heard anything for July or August but I just hope that baseball comes back.”
Young is currently living in Arizona and mentioned how the state has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases after re-opening its economy too soon.
“It’s pretty interesting because Arizona had a lot of things open up pretty early and we were somewhat back to normal life almost and then it just got smacked again so I have been staying inside a lot and haven’t done much the past two weeks.”
