Is the future of the PG Dome in limbo?

With no large gatherings allowed during the era of COVID-19, the PG Dome has fallen on hard times.

In 2017, local resident Jon Lafontaine took over the lease but decided not to renew when it expires at the end of August.

Lafontaine told MyPGNow.com the pandemic’s restrictions played a role in his decision.

“It’s gone from being busy every weekend with birthday parties and sporting events and business fairs, those gatherings aren’t allowed to take place as you are not allowed to have more than 50 people. With all the non-profit sporting groups that have had their seasons cancelled, we haven’t been seeing those groups to rent out the facility to.”

“It’s just becoming too much of a risk for me and my family with the COVID rules and procedures to keep going.”

He mentioned the building has been a big part of his life, which created a lot of fond memories.

“It’s kind of an iconic building here in Prince George, I play a lot of the sports that take place there and I went roller skating here when I was a child so it’s been a big part of my life.”

Lafontaine added the future of the building is up in the air with the property owners mulling over its options.

“I don’t know exactly where they are at, I know they had some interested parties. I am not sure who those are or what they are planning to do in there but we’ve had an interest due to its a great location.”

“I don’t know what the future holds for that building. I made lots of improvements over the last three years, even though they did go by fast, I hope someone picks it up and continues to offer that to some of the other sporting groups that aren’t welcome at some of the other places.”
