Teacher anxiety skyrockets after SD57 sees first case of COVID-19

The first case of COVID-19 in SD57 was identified at PGSS on Friday, and the teachers are now feeling the heat.

“There’s a lot of teachers working with anxiety,” explained President of the Prince George District Teachers’ Association (PGDTA), Joanne Hapke.

While the teachers of SD57 have worked previously in the pandemic during the springtime, the return to full classes has created more uneasiness.

“We need more support,” Hapke urged, “we do have an employee family assistance program where we are able to contact our counselling services provided to us, but they might be overwhelmed now.”

According to Hapke, teachers have been preparing for the first case of the virus to be identified ever since the return to school.

“Initially on Friday there was some concern,” Hapke noted, “but most of the teachers that I’ve spoken with are trying to be as healthy as they can with this information.”

In order to ease some of the anxiety among SD57 teachers, the PGDTA believes that releasing more specific information on future cases would help.

“The children are only in two courses this semester,” explained Hapke, “so if they’re not in a math class then we could at least tell the math teachers not to worry about it.”
