“Slopes for Hope” Saturday at Powder King

Skiers and snowboarders from across the North will converge at Powder King Mountain this Saturday for “Slopes for Hope”.

Event Coordinator – Karenesa Medhurst with the Canadian Cancer Society says the challenge before you is to scale the height of Mount Everest to raise money for their cancer support and awareness programs.

“That is just over 29,000 feet, at Powder King, that would be about 15 or 16 runs,” she says.

Why Mount Everest? Medhurst calls it a “Symbolic challenge”.

“It’s a way of challenging them to something really difficult, similar to somebody that’s going through a cancer journey ,” she explains. “There’s lots of ways to come together, lots of cancer survivors are out there participating, as well as their friends and family. It’s a really fun way to celebrate and do a good thing.”

So far, the youngest registered participant is five years old, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“People can do it as a team, or if they really want to challenge themselves, do it as individuals,” Medhurst says.

The money raised goes towards their cancer awareness and support programs.

“We have lodges at the Cancer Society where people can stay while they’re undergoing treatment. We also do a lot of cancer prevention work, both research as well as programs that help stop people from getting cancer in the fist place. The money also goes to research to find new cures and new treatments.”

The event runs from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m..

Registration is $10 and you receive breakfast, a BBQ lunch, a neck warmer and live entertainment.
