School District 57 Board pressured to implement mandatory mask policy in all grades

During the School District 57 public meeting, chair members were pressured to implement masks in all ages of students of SD57.

President of the Prince George District Association (PGDTA), Joanne Hapke explained to the board just how scared and stressed many teachers are feeling at work.

“The knowledge that school families will be travelling outside our region and returning to school January 4th did not provide comfort,” explained Hapke,” once again we are working again in the unknown.”

Hapke explained that the new COVID-19 variant identified in BC has also put additional stress on teachers within the school district.

She requested the Board speak directly to teachers of the PGDTA and ask them about safety protocols currently in schools.

“I’m also asking that the Teachers Restart Plan created in September be reviewed,” added Hapke, “we’ve been working with this for four months and it should be reviewed and scrutinized as the school year marches on.”

The board also heard from a Prince George mother, Zoe Meletis, who urged the board to implement mandatory mask wearing for all ages in students at SD57.

“You have the ability to show teachers that you value them, and resolve the issue with an easy, no-cost measure of mandatory mask wearing for all age groups,” Meletis said,”and do something to make a difference for all the kids and teachers by implementing this policy.”

During the meeting, the board also reviewed the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Report.

A motion was passed for the draft Terms of Reference for the Ad-Hoc Committee on Truth and Reconciliation to be approved as presented.

Another motion was passed to refer the new policies and admin procedures that are currently in draft form be referred by the TRC Ad Hoc Committee.

Additionally, Chairperson Tim Bennett noted that Kindergarten registration opens on Jan 26th and the transfer process is open from February 3rd to March 2nd.

All SD57 public board meetings will be held online for the foreseeable future, the next meeting will be on January 26th.

Board meetings will be held on Youtube, the link will be provided on the SD57 website leading up to the meeting.
