The average age of Prince George residents is a shade under 40 (39.8) according to Stats Canada.
In its population estimates survey, the northern capital is the youngest city of its size when compared to Kelowna or Kamloops where the average age in those communities is between 42-44.
Analyst, Sebastian Lavoie spoke with MyPGNow.com and broke down some of the city’s age demographics.
“As far as the 0-14 age range for Prince George, it’s about 16%, so about one in six, and that is generally higher than Kelowna and Kamloops. As far as the 65 and over Prince George is about one-sixth of the population where that is a little higher in Kelowna and Kamloops at one in five.”
“The people moving to Kelowna for example, tend to be older, so in that sense, Prince George compared to all of these other cities is actually a younger city on average compared to its counterparts in the Okanagan or even Vancouver or Victoria.”
As of last July, the Prince George region, which includes the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, saw its population grow by 1.1% to 96,015 when compared to the same time period in 2019.
Similar to the Lower Mainland, most of the new traffic was dominated by international arrivals.
“So for Prince George, it’s more like Vancouver where about 70% of this growth is from international migration in the form of foreign workers or students coming in. However, if you look at the numbers even further, probably about 80-90 percent of the population in that greater area is still in Prince George proper.”
PG has the lowest number of seniors (65 and over) when its stacked up to cities of similar size with a population of just 14,572.
In contrast, Kelowna has more than double the amount of elderly residents at 48-thousand while Victoria is hovering around 90-thousand.
