UNBC Timberwolf Tyrell Laing will be taking part in a Black History Month event tomorrow (Tuesday), featuring several prominent Black personalities with ties to university sports in Canada.
The live conversation represents a chance to examine issues and barriers that the BIPOC community faces, highlight advocacy work by U Sports members, and celebrating success stories of the Black community, says U Sports — a chance that hasn’t been available in the past.
U Sports Conversations features eight panelists, including prominent Black student-athletes, coaches, sport administrators and alumni of U SPORTS member athletic programs and institutions.
“I decided to jump on board right away. I was thrilled, just to know I would have this opportunity to speak on a high platform, that a lot of people would listen to,” said Laing to MyPGNow.
Laing made local headlines last year after sharing his experiences of racism in a video following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minnesota police.
“It hits close to home for me,” said Laing.
“I wanted to assist in making an impact, and I figured using my voice was the best way to do so. It (the video) turned out pretty well. We had no idea that the video was going to affect as many people as it did.”
