Northern doctors receive prestigious awards

Dr.Maheen Mujutaba of Prince George is the recipient of The BC College of Family Physicians (BCCFP) R2 Resident Award.

Each year the award is given to three exceptional R2s graduating from the UBC Family Practice Residency Program that displays a passion for family medicine while leading by example.

Dr.Mujtaba is an R2 resident at the Prince George family medicine site that trained in Pakistan at the Shifa College of Medicine and became the first female resident lead for the International Medical Graduates in the UBC Family Practices Residency Program.

Her work has consisted of leading a pivotal survey of 300 family physician residents aimed at uncovering the presence of racism within the residency program.

She responded to the results and made sure that racism and mistreatment was recognized and addressed through real, actionable change.

Meanwhile, Dr.Shu Fung Ho in Vanderhoof received the My Family Doctor Award from the College.

The My Family Doctor Award is given to one doctor from each region, as the winner is nominated by their patients.

He currently focuses on rural family practice, working in the hospital ER and manages the cardiac stress testing program, provides anesthesia services in the operating room and works in trauma on call.

“Dr. Fung Ho has made going to the doctor a safe place. I feel really listened to. I feel he considers all aspects of my care. I am in my early 60s and have had my fair share of doctors, but none with this man’s bedside manner. He has made a huge difference in how I view our medical system and I feel very blessed he has taken me as a patient. Living in a smaller community, we are so very lucky to have many good doctors practicing here,” said Dr.Ho’s nominator.

Over 350 doctors were nominated across the province for this award, which was a record number of nominations for the BCCFP.
