UNBC study into hitchhiking going out to communities

Research into the connection between sexual victimization and hitchhiking is starting to be done in Northern B-C communities.

UNBC Coordinator of Women and Gender Studies Jaqueline Holler says research has been underway for the past two years in online surveys and literature reviews.

“What we’re going to be doing now is asking women in person about their experiences hitchhiking,” says Holler, “and we are particularly interested in experiences that are sexually threatening or sexually victimizing.”

Holler says the study’s preliminary research has found there is clear sexual harms when it comes to hitchhiking.

She says they want to figure why this happens.
