A Student engineering team from UNBC has won a Provincial competition.
The five Environmental Engineering students teamed up for this years BC Water and Waste Association Student Design Competition.
This competition saw students present a conceptual design based on a BC municipalities design criteria, with this years competition focused on development of sewage break down, and the production of a bio gas at the city of Kelowna’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Stephanie Wall (Doherty) was one of the five members of the team, and says the final design needed cohesion and had some industry support:
“So we had to make sure we were all on the same page with how to go about the design solution, and each team also had an industry consultant that they could discuss with”
Their solution produced electrical and thermal energy while recovering bio solids for use as fertilizer, it also reduced greenhouses gasses by up to 90% of conventional methods.
As winners, the team will now be presenting at the 2015 BCWWA Annual conference and trade show.
