Safe Restart Funds won’t be used to lower taxes, but it might get used elsewhere

Last night (Monday) was the start of the City of Prince George’s budget talks that will continue tomorrow at 3:30pm.

One of the few decisions that wasn’t saved for tomorrow’s deliberations was what was being done with the Safe Restart Fund.

The fund is being replenished to the full $6,110,000, and won’t be used to offset the potential rise in taxes, but still might get used in other areas.

The Financial Overview presented by the City showed that the money could be used to offset costs for a number of things:

  • Revenue shortfalls
  • Facilities reopening and operating costs
  • Emergency Planning and response costs
  • Bylaw enforcement and protective services including Police and Fire
  • Computer and technology costs
  • Services for vulnerable people

Director of Finance Kris Dalio explained that moving this money to the Safe Restart Fund prevented them from being pushed into the General Operating Budget, thus allowing for more flexibility on how the money is used.

Whether those funds will be used right away or not will be decided during tomorrow’s Council Meeting, when Council starts making decisions on where money will go.
