Cougars get a point against Kamloops but drop to 9th in standings

Four teams are separated by two points in the WHL Western Conference battle for 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Three of those four will make the playoffs and one will not as the top eight advances.

The Prince George Cougars dropped to 9th place after a 4-3 overtime loss to the B.C. Division champion Kamloops Blazers.

The Spokane Chiefs moved ahead of P.G. as they beat the Vancouver Giants 4-1 Sunday in Langley for their third road win in as many days.

In P.G., Daylan Kuefler scored on a power-play 56 seconds into overtime as the Blazers erased a two-goal deficit before 2,354 spectators on Fan Appreciation Day Sunday afternoon at CN Centre.

The game stats and highlights are right here.

Ty Young made 41 saves as Kamloops outshot Prince George 45-31.

Connor Bowie, Riley Heidt, and Jonny Hooker all scored in the first period for the Cougars, who led 3-1 after 20 minutes.

The game was tied 3-3 after two.

Logan Stankoven, Ethan Brandwood, and Reese Belton notched the other goals for the (46-16-2) Blazers.

“That’s a point that could potentially put us in the playoffs. I thought that was a real gutsy effort by our team and I’m very proud of them,” said Cougars’ General Manager & Head Coach Mark Lamb.

The (22-37-3-1) Cougars are just a point behind the (22-37-4-1) Chiefs and two points behind the (22-36-5-1) Victoria Royals and the (23-35-4-0) Giants.

Vancouver has six games remaining, P.G. has five left, and Spokane and Victoria have four remaining.

The Cougars, who have dropped 13 of their last 16, host the (37-19-1-5) Kelowna Rockets Tuesday and Wednesday and Victoria on Saturday before closing on the road at Kamloops on April 15th and at Kelowna on April 16th.
