WHL:

Portland Winterhawks  2  Prince George Cougars  1  (Game 2 Saturday)

The Winterhawks scored just past the 13-minute mark in each of the first two periods and held on for the victory.

Portland leads the best-of-7 Western Conference quarterfinal 2-0 with Games 3 and 4 Tuesday and Wednesday at CN Centre in PG.

Tyler Brennan was superb in the Cougars net with 44 saves as Portland outshot Prince George 46-23 before 4,678 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Former Winterhawk Jonas Brøndberg scored the only goal for the Cats at 16:29 of the second period.

The Winterhawks scored the first three goals of the game in the opening nine minutes, two of them on the power-play.

Portland went 3-for-5 with the man advantage while Prince George was 1-for-3.

The loss all but mathematically knocked the Canucks out of playoff contention.

With three games left, Vancouver is six points behind the Dallas Stars for the final Western Conference wildcard spot.

The (38-30-11) Canucks host Seattle on Tuesday, host L.A. on Thursday and conclude their season with a road game at Edmonton on Friday.
