The BC Government has been talking about and planning for potential heat domes this year, and the City of Prince George said planning is underway on their end as well.
“So the City is following the provincial recommendations to start preparing for the potential of extreme heat events,” said Tanya Spooner, the Manager of Emergency Programs for the City.
“Within an extreme heat event, one of the biggest concerns is vulnerable populations. So that’s the elderly, and that’s also the vulnerable populations that are underhoused or have no housing. So we are starting to have discussions with various service groups.”
Spooner said their talks are revolving around how the City can help if an extreme heat event happens, but notes that nothing will be set in stone, and it will be dependent on the situation.
“I can’t say right now what facility will be open as a cooling centre in any particular event, but we will have civic facilities available, either working and operating normal public hours that have air conditioning and cooling ability. Or if there is an extreme event, and it is within the City’s ability to do so and open up a facility, we may look at that. But there’s no guarantee of what facility that is, or what that would look like at this point.”
A provincial heat alert system will be in place this year, but Spooner noted that the City will be reaching out and communicating with the public if things start heating up.
“We have our own messaging that we would be sending out to residents that would let them know what civic facilities may be open, giving tips on how to stay cool within your own home.”
She said that people should prepare for an extreme heat event, but also to keep an eye out for your neighbour as well.
