Positive Living North says a new sobering centre in Prince George will help tackle some of the social issues the city has grappled with for several years.

On Monday, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Sheila Malcolmson stated the facility located on 1201 1st Avenue is slated to open by the fall.
The new sobering centre in PG will consist of eight to ten beds, spanning over two rooms with medical staff providing around-the-clock care.
Positive Living North Executive Director, Angela Carter told MyPGNow.com that while this is a step forward, easier access to detox centres is also vital.
“It’s not the fault of organizations, it’s just the way it is. Treatment centres across British Columbia and Canada there are six-month waiting lists. It’s a barrier for people who want to get clean or sober on a particular day because six months later, we might not even have that person here.”
In addition, Carter stated public health emergencies like the illicit drug crisis is taking a toll on their staff.
“We see many overdoses weekly. Our outreach team see it daily sometimes and so when you ask how has that affected our organization, we try and take care of our own mental health and make sure I am taking care of my staff in a good way.”
“It’s something that you take home,” added Carter. “You care about these people that you are serving and so when we see these things happening, day in and day out, it can be really draining on our own spirits.”
Positive Living North provides a wide array of programs and services designed to raise public awareness, and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Their main office is located at #1-1563 Second Avenue. The non-profit also operates the “Fire Pit” Cultural drop-in centre on 1120 Third Avenue.
They also have offices in Smithers and Fort St. John.
