Canadian Native Fastball Championships a success

The sounds of bats and balls once again filled the air at Carrie Jane Grey Park, first at the BC Summer Games, and again on the long weekend at the national level.

Randy Potskin, a board member for both the Host Committee and the Canadian Fastball Association, says the Canadian Native Fastball Championships ran as well as could be expected after two summers off.

Players everywhere from Vancouver to Nova Scotia made the journey to Prince George to compete this weekend.

“Overall it was a huge success,” Potskin said. “The weather was good, we ended with new champions, and everyone showed up.”

The four divisions were all crowned champions last night (Sunday).

The under 23 Jr. Division was taken by the host team, Falcon Contracting (aka Big Guy Lake).

The Men’s division was won by STK, a team with players from all over BC.

E.C.M. from Six Nations, Ontario, took the Women’s division.

The Master’s Division banner will be headed to Sapotawayak, Manitoba

The weekend was hot, “but no serious issues,” according to Potskin. Minor delays and lots of water were the only byproducts of the 30-degree weather, and he echoed Harley Desjarlais’ anything-but-rain sentiment.

Potskin thanked all the players that came to revive the tournament after the pandemic, and especially the volunteers who were working in the aforementioned heat.
