Weekend fatality confirmed at Brucejack mine

For the third time in five years, a work-related death has occurred at the Brucejack mine just north of Stewart.

The latest fatality occurred on Saturday according to Newcrest Mining where a team member of its contracting partner passed away in what is being described as an isolated incident.

“This is devastating news that no-one ever wants to hear. The feeling of profound sadness when a life is lost is never forgotten. Our thoughts
and deepest sympathies are with the family and those close to our colleague during this very difficult and
an emotional time.”

“The site incident management and mine rescue teams have been working around the clock with the relevant authorities to ensure safe access to the incident location which was a complex task. I am immensely proud of the courage, determination and care shown by every team member throughout this challenging process.”

“The loss of a colleague is far-reaching and long-lasting. This incident is a stark reminder that there is nothing more important than people’s safety, health and well-being,” said Sandeep Biswas, Newcrest Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In 2018, a Smithers resident who was an employee of a company contracted to the mine died at a support camp near the mine location.

Two years ago, another person was killed during maintenance at a support facility on the surface.

Mining and processing operations at Brucejack will remain suspended until further notice.
