WHL:

The (14-13) Prince George Cougars are 1-2 on a six-game road trip that will continue this weekend.

The Cougars visit the (12-13) Tri-City Americans tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

P.G. fell on Wednesday 4-2 against the Portland Winterhawks.

The PG Cougars have added depth to their back end.

The Cougars acquired 18-year-old defenceman Ross Stanley from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in return for a 6th-round pick in the 2024 draft.

He has four points in 17 games this season with the Hurricanes.

This will be Stanley’s 4th WHL team in three years, having also played with Edmonton and Prince Albert.

Two PG Cougars will spend the weekend at Canada’s world junior selection camp.

Tyler Brennan and Ethan Sampson are among 29 players, including 13 from the WHL, that will try to earn a spot at camp that begins today in Moncton, N.B.

Brennan is one of four goalies and Sampson is among nine defencemen on the Canadian roster.

The IIHF World Junior Championship in Moncton and Halifax begins on Boxing Day with four games, including Canada taking on Czechia.

BCHL: 

The (13-10-1-1) Prince George Spruce Kings will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the (6-16-1-1) Cowichan Valley Capitals tonight at 7:00.

The Spruce Kings are coming off Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to the Warriors in West Kelowna.

P.G. is 5th out of nine teams in the Interior Division while Cowichan is last in the Coastal Division and the entire BCHL.

The Penticton Vees lead the league with a perfect 24-0 record.

BC Elite Hockey League: (BCEHL)

(Under-18)

The (5-8-1) U18 Cariboo Cougars visit the (7-8-0-1) Valley West Giants on Saturday (11:45 AM) in Delta and Sunday (10 AM) in Langley.

Valley West is 6th and Cariboo is 7th in the 9-team league.

World Cup Soccer:  (in Qatar)

The World Cup quarterfinals started today.

Croatia beat Brazil 4-2 on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1.

In the other game, Argentina got by the Netherlands 4-3 on penalty kicks after the teams tied 2-2.

Croatia and Argentina will meet in the semis on Tuesday (11 AM PT).

The other two quarters will be played Saturday: Portugal against Morocco (7 AM) and France vs. England (11 AM).

NFL: (Week 14)

LA Rams  17  Las Vegas Raiders  16

Baker Mayfield, who just joined the Rams on Tuesday, led LA to the comeback victory as they trailed 16-3 in the 4th quarter.

Mayfield tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds remaining to cap a 98-yard drive.
