Late game heroics propel Spruce Kings over Vipers

Few things can bring fans to their feet like a game-winning goal in the final minutes of the third period.

That was the case for 740 fans in the Kopar Memorial Arena last night when Ty Gagno scored a 3-2 goal on the powerplay with two and a half minutes on the clock.

The Spruce Kings got out to an early lead, 2-0 in the first eleven minutes of the game.

Vernon clawed back, scoring late in the second and early in the third period to tie the game.

Gagno’s heroics helped the Kings avoid overtime, improving their record to 24-18-4-1, 5th in the Interior Division with 53 points.

Vernon falls to 21-20-2-4, 7th in the division with 48 points.

Prince George was 2/2 on the powerplay while Vernon went 0/3.

Vernon outshot PG 21-20.

The win moves the Kings within two points of the fourth place Salmon Arm Silverbacks (55) and three of the West Kelowna Warriors (56) with seven games remaining in the regular season.

These two teams will rematch in Prince George again tonight, puck drops at 7:00
