The BC Wildlife Federation has announced a three-day outdoor education course for women that will cover “the basics for aspiring hunters, anglers, backwoods photographers and campers.”
It is called Becoming Outdoors Women, and it will run from May 12 to 14 at Ness Lake Bible Camp.
“They can hone different skills that can help them feel empowered, confident, and ready to go into the outdoors lifestyle with more knowledge than what they came with,” explained Melanie Sereda, the BC Wildlife Federation’s Women’s Program Coordinator.
She added the weekend will feature hunting and foraging, artwork and photography, guns and bows, and sessions on land and on the water.
In a release, the Federation said “nearly 10,000 women have taken the province’s prerequisite course to become a hunter in the past five years. About 2,000 women have taken and passed the CORE Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education program every year since 2017, up from 791 in 2004.”
This means one in every four new hunters are female.
“Women are slowly learning if we want to do it, we can do it too,” Sereda said. “Now there are support systems in place where they can learn and educate, and feel safe in asking all these questions.”
While the weekend is in mid May, registration closes on April 16th.
