10,000 Chinook Salmon to be released into Nechako River this weekend

The Spruce City Wildlife Association (SCWA) is inviting the public to its annual Salmon Fry release, which will be taking place this Sunday (May 28).

Jesi Lauzon, SCWA’s Operations Coordinator, said interested people can help release this year’s batch of around 10,000 salmon, learn about the hatchery, and get a free lunch.

“[This] is very important,” she explained, “the Nechako Chinook are a threatened stock. The work we do every year gives them a chance to rebuild that stock. Hopefully one day it can be self-sustaining.”

Last year, Lauzon said around 300 people came out to help release the salmon.

The SCWA is a non-profit organization that is funded by donations, she said the release is also a great chance for the organization to reach out to the public.

“We will have volunteer sign-up sheets at the release – if there is a specific project someone is interested in they can sign up right on site,” she said.

Lauzon said some of the other projects they have on the go include free duck nesting boxes and hen houses for anyone living in the Ominica region, a water quality project at Cottonwood Island Park, and the construction of a new trout pond at the hatchery.

She added Spruce City is “the most technologically advanced volunteer hatchery in the province, and the only hatchery that works with critically endangered stock.”

The release will take place at the hatchery at 1384  River Road from noon until 2:00 on Sunday.
