Alzheimer’s walk aiming to raise $20,000 this weekend

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is coming up this weekend, with the goal of raising $20,000 locally.

Laurie De Croos, a spokesperson for the Walk and Alzheimer’s Society of BC, said the walk has raised over $41 million across Canada since 2015.

“It is the society’s way to pay tribute and honour people in our communities who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, or any related dementia,” she explained.

All the money goes towards research into the disease and ways to treat it, as well as programs, services, and support for people with Alzheimer’s and their families.

“It is a disease you can’t do alone, it requires help, support and education,” De Croos said.

Every year, the walk honours a family that is being impacted by a form of dementia.

This year, that family is Sandi and Florent Foucher.

“People don’t understand the struggles that are going on inside,” said Sandi, primary caregiver to Florent, who lives at home with the disease. “I don’t want to be negative when I see people. I want to be positive about something.”

Florent is one of 85,000 people living with dementia in BC.

Registration for the walk begins at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon (May 28) at the YMCA, the walk itself will start at 3:00.
