CrossFit athletes clash in the “Battle of the North”

The first-ever ‘Battle of the North’ CrossFit competition held its final day of competition at Masich Place Stadium today. (Sunday)

“We’ve had a lot of feedback, but the event has gone as good as the volunteers have been, and our volunteers, our community, have stepped up in such a big way,” said Stephen O’Beirne, Owner/Operator of the event.

“They have created an absolutely amazing event, rave reviews from the athletes and it’s because of the dogged work of the equipment crew, the judging crew.”

O’Beirne noted the equipment crew has been moving over 25,000 lbs of equipment from CrossFit Northern ICE, Rona, and from many other places in Prince George.

“The crew and the volunteers that have come together to make this event happen have been spectacular.”

Despite a rainy Saturday, O’Beirne said the athletes showed a lot of resilience through the wet conditions.

“We switched up the order of the events, which really changed some of the stimulus, especially for the high skill movements in the event that was supposed to be scheduled first,” he explained.

“We were able to hold off long enough that we were able to keep the athletes safe, so that people weren’t slipping off ropes. The athletes valiantly battled the weather this weekend.”

O’Beirne added they’re hoping to continue to have this event every year.

“We’ve got to make sure that we can get the feedback from these athletes to learn what we did well and what we can improve on,” he said.

“We want to offer events that are equivalent to or better that what you would get down south.”

O’Beirne said the event managers, Chelsey Bergeron and Marcie O’Beirne put in eight months of work for the three day event.
