PG Hospice House’s first 50/50 draw won by 25-year supporter

“It is really important work they do for the whole community, supporting it is not a problem for me.”

Those were some of Lorenzo Monai’s first words after being handed a cheque for $150,000 from the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society after winning their first ever 50/50 draw yesterday (Friday).

“It is surreal. It is absolutely surreal,” Monai said. “Well – I mean – obviously it is real, I’ve got it in my hand. You don’t buy the ticket expecting to win, that is not the purpose really”

Monai said he has a personal connection with the Hospice House after seeing a close family friend pass away in their care 25 years ago, and he has supported them since.

“I got to see the actual work, that was my first exposure to the Hospice Society and the good work they do for the entire community. Supporting it is not a problem for me, I buy the tickets, winning is just the cap, it is absolutely amazing,” he said.

He said the money will go towards a new roof for his house, his kids’ education, and a nice dinner for himself and his coworkers.

Fresh off the success of this 50/50 draw, Hospice has announced another will be running until January 2024 that starts right away. That jackpot could get up to $250,000.

Monai will be buying a ticket for that draw too, saying “Support everything that Hospice does.”

You can buy tickets for the second raffle here.
