FIBA men’s basketball: World Cup

Canada beat Slovenia 100-89 today (Wednesday) in the quarterfinals.

The Canadian team advances to the semifinals against Serbia on Friday at 1:45 a.m. PT.

On Sunday, Canada qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, (their first Olympic berth since 2000).

The other semi will have Germany against the USA.

Major League Baseball:

Toronto Blue Jays  7  Oakland A’s  1

The (77-62) Jays visit the (42-97) A’s again this afternoon (12:37 PT) as Toronto goes for a 3-game sweep.

The Blue Jays have moved into the third and final wild-card spot in the American League, half a game ahead of the (76-62) Texas Rangers and just half a game behind the (77-61) Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners have lost three straight.

Hockey:

The Prince George Cougars and P.G. Spruce Kings both start their pre-schedule schedule on the Lower Mainland this weekend.

The Cougars will play Vancouver on Friday and Victoria on Saturday with both exhibition games in Port Coquitlam.

The Spruce Kings play the Chiefs on Friday in Chilliwack and the Rivermen on Saturday in Langley.

UNBC Timberwolves:

The (0-3-1) UNBC Timberwolves will host (0-4) Thompson Rivers Friday night at 6:00 and Sunday at noon at Masich Place Stadium in Canada West men’s soccer.

The (0-2) UNBC women’s soccer team will be on the road this weekend as they visit (1-2) Thompson Rivers Friday night at 6:00 in Kamloops and (2-0-1) UBC Okanagan Saturday night at 5:30 in Kelowna.

Junior Football:

The (2-2) Prince George Kodiaks junior football team will visit the (2-2) Langley Rams on Saturday at 4 PM.

It is the first of back-to-back games between the two teams who will also meet on Saturday, September 16th (at 7 PM) at Masich Place Stadium.

NFL:

The NFL kicks off a new season on Thursday night (5:20 PT).

The league opener features the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs at home against the Detroit Lions.

CFL: (Week 14)

The (8-4) B.C. Lions are idle this week and will resume action on Saturday, Sept 16th when they host the (3-8) Ottawa RedBlacks at 4 PM.

The Lions are two points behind the (9-3) Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the battle for top spot in the West Division.

Week 14 starts Friday (4:30 PM PT) with (4-7) Hamilton at (3-8) Ottawa.

There are three league games on Saturday.
