City Council to consider CN Centre sound system upgrade

A sound system upgrade could be in the cards for the CN Centre.

At tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting, Prince George City Council will hear a report from Director of Civic Facilities and Events Andy Beesley, requesting the project be added to the 2023-2027 Financial Plan.

The budget for the project would be $950,000, funded from the Northern Capital and Planning Reserve fund.

“In 2019, as part of the Civic Facilities Renewal Strategy, an assessment was completed of the CN Centre audio equipment,” wrote Beesley in the report.

“The assessment identified that most of the equipment, dating back to late 90’s had exceeded both its technical lifetime and its reliable service lifetime. The existing systems were at high risk of a system wide failure with little or no access to spare parts or replacement pieces.”

Beesley noted with the COVID-19 pandemic halting events at the CN Centre for two years, the lifespan of the sound system was extended briefly.

“With entertainment and sporting events returning to CN Centre, the City is now operating at full capacity once again,” he continued.

“Working in conjunction with our tenants, user groups and event promoters, the City has an obligation to provide a sports and entertainment facility to suit the needs of these groups.”

Beesley wrote if city council were to approve adding the project to the 2023-2027 Financial Plan, City Administration would be able to move forward with a tender for Q4 2023, with installation possible in the Summer of 2024.

Other items to be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting include a report on green space management, and a budget amendment for a transformer replacement at City Hall.
