The provincial government is funding 5,000 shelter spaces across 50 cities in BC as temperatures start to dip into the negatives.
The Ministry of Housing made the announcement this afternoon (Friday).
Prince George is gaining 151 shelter spaces for the winter:
- AWAC Women’s Shelter, 144 George St., 40 year-round spaces
- Ketso Yoh Centre Men’s Hostel, 140 Quebec St., 21 year-round spaces
- Second Avenue Shelter, 1151 2nd Ave., 30 year-round spaces
- Bridget Moran Place, 1188 6th Avenue. 45 year-round spaces
According to the Ministry, BC Housing has helped convert 135 temporary shelter spaces into year-round shelter spaces in northern BC.
They say last year, 1,652 temporary shelter spaces were made permanent.
The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness said they will also reimburse local authorities and First Nations who open up warming shelters over the course of the winter.
