Prince George City Council will be advocating for Holocaust education to start at a younger age in the province.
At tonight’s (Monday) meeting, Council approved a resolution to be submitted to the North Central Local Government Association. (NCLGA)
The resolution calls on the NCLGA to help advocate the Ministry of Education and Child Care to introduce mandatory Holocaust education to BC’s Elementary Schools as of the 2024-2025 academic year.
“The basis of this came just prior to the Province of BC approving mandatory Holocaust education at the high school level,” said Councillor Garth Frizzell.
“It’s recommended that it go at the age appropriate education begin at the elementary school level, that’s where we began, and that’s where Ontario has gone and other jurisdictions.”
Frizzell said this advocacy is calling on the province to “make it better than it has settled on.”
Another recommendation provided to council would have the resolution be shared with School District 57, but Mayor Simon Yu called for an amendment to expand it to include private schools in Prince George as well.
Both recommendations were passed unanimously.
Other items discussed tonight included a project review on a Fire Services Training Site, and a facility to provide support for young people.
