Annual Tree of Lights fundraiser beginning this week

United Way is setting out to light the tree and raise money at the Coast Hotel once again.

Trista Spencer, the Executive Director of United Way, said this year, the fundraised money will go to local children and youth programming.

“We have found a lot of the gaps and areas in need involve children and families,” she said. “We really wanted to focus on that this year.”

The goal is to raise $50,000, with the Christmas tree’s lights functioning as a thermometer to demonstrate how far the fundraiser has progressed.

Normally the tree is on top of the hotel, but this year, due to a lack of volunteers, it will live in the hotel’s lobby.

The fundraiser starts on Thursday (December 7th), with a free coinciding book drive being held on Saturday at the Coast Hotel from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

United Way said the drive will bring in books for children and youth in need, and includes a draw for a prize pack from Terrill Bonder photography.

There will also be plenty of chances to donate to the campaign, take family photos, have snacks and hot chocolate, and Santa will make an appearance for a story time at 2:00.

“We really want to make sure the resources that are available are developed, and that people locally can contribute and really feel like they are making a difference and an impact with their contribution,” Spencer said.

The campaign will run until December 21st, Spencer said the total should be announced on the 22nd.
