Nationally decorated boxers re-opening local gym

“Jag and I have had a dream of opening a gym for 15 years now.”

Kenny Lally and Jag Seehra are re-opening the Inner City Boxing Gym above the Roll-A-Dome in February.

The local duo have been boxing since high school and trained at Inner City’s first iteration.

Training and coaching will be their next challenge.

“After retirement, we took a step away, get assimilated into blue-collar life and get our lives going,” Lally said. “Now we are both comfortable where we are, it is time to share our knowledge with our community.”

Giving a highlight reel of their boxing careers, Seehra said “I had 137 amateur fights, medaled four times at nationals, was on the National B Team for a while, 11 Provincial Championships. The accolades are quite a few.”

Lally said he is a “seven time Canadian National Champion, 11 time BC Provincial Champion, I got to travel the world with Team Canada for about a decade, and in 2015 I received a bronze medal at the Pan-American Games.”

The gym opens on February 5th, they will be offering four different classes:

  • Boxer Fit, which is a non-contact workout class three times a week (which is also offered as a women’s only class),
  • Boxing 101, which is an introduction to the sport and its fundamentals,
  • And two Youth Programs, geared towards kids aged 6-9 and 10-12.

“What boxing did for Jag and I was taught us great discipline and our work ethic,” Lally explained. “It is only as hard as you make it. Like any high level sport out there, there are levels in training. That is what we are very good at – teaching you how to get to the next level.”

“We can really relate, we were beginners and we got to that level,” Seehra “Anybody can do this sport if they have the hard work and dedication.”

Ultimately, Seehra and Lally said they want to build an “elite” competitive amateur team like the ones they had when they were boxing at the Inner City Gym.

According to the Gym’s website, 82% of national boxing medals won by BC athletes in 2011 were from Inner City Boxers.

“That will take time. For now, we want to give back to the community and get people in shape,” Lally said.

They said more people are registering for classes every day, and the interest around Prince George is growing.

You can learn more about the gym on their Facebook page or website.
