City Council used $49,182 of Council Contingency Fund in 2023

Prince George City Council left a good chunk of the Council Contingency Fund unspent last year.

According to a report that will go before Prince George City Council on Monday, the remaining balance of the fund on December 31st was $25,818.

Council contingency was set at $75,000 for 2023.

The Council Contingency Fund may be used at City Council’s discretion to fund one-time expenses that may arise during the year.

The unspent funds will not carry forward into this year, and they will be absorbed into the City’s year-end surplus.

Throughout last year, Council used the money to fund four projects in Prince George.

At the April 24th meeting, Council approved $18,300 for the Northwest Invasive Plant Council for 2023.

On July 24th, Council allocated $7,500 for the Inspiring Women Among Us event at UNBC, the event was held from November 22nd to 29th.

On August 16th, Council approved a $15,000 budget to put a “Home of the Rocky Mountain Rangers” sign at the entrances to the city, however this work was completed for $3,382.

In September, Council used $20,000 from the Council Contingency Fund to create a one-time micro grant for damages caused by the downtown explosion last year.

In early November, delegates from the Royal Canadian Legion requested $18,000 to help put on the Remembrance Day Ceremony.

At that time, Council believed there was only approximately $14,000 left in the Contingency, and voted to explore funding options at the following meeting.

However, an anonymous donor stepped up and provided the funding in full for the event.
