A special International Women’s Day performance set in the First World War is on its way to the Theatre NorthWest Stage this week.
The play is called Bluebirds, it is about three Canadian war nurses finding a connection with one another despite the gruesome situation they have found themselves in.
Sandra Clermont is presenting the play and also plays the role of Nurse Gladys (Bab) Wake.
“I really learned something in the process of [this play],” Clermont explained. “I feel very strongly that women’s past accomplishments, what they’ve done through the world in history, are very often washed away and we don’t know about them.”
The play has a more serious tone than many of Theatre Northwest’s previous stage readings, but Clermont said there are moments of levity throughout.
“The women in the play become drawn to one another as friends because they are in this horrible situation together,” she said. “The friendship and the bond together is what keeps them from going into those dark places together… they are still finding their humanity and joy of life even though they are being presented with hell on earth.”
While it is a stage reading and not a full blown production, the actresses will be in costume and music will be incorporated.
The performance will be held on Friday night (March 8) at 7:00.
