City Council approves work plan for Advisory Committee on Accessibility

Prince George City Council received an annual report from the City’s Advisory Committee on Accessibility and Inclusion at Monday’s meeting.

It also included a work plan for this year, which provides five goals:

  • Respond to referrals from Council regarding issues related to accessibility and inclusion.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance Organizational accessibility and inclusion for Council consideration and advise Council of barriers that prevent individuals from interacting in or with the organization.
  • Review ongoing/upcoming action items in the Accessibility Work Plan 2023-2026 and provide recommendations to ensure the needs of persons with disabilities are considered.
  • Monitor and report on progress towards achievement of actions identified in the City’s Accessibility Plan.
  • Participate in related events and activities including those designed to receive public feedback regarding the Organization’s accessibility plan.

“Getting to this meeting was a lot easier than it was a decade ago,” said Vice-Chair of the Committee Ken Biron when asked how the city is doing when it comes to accessibility.

“We’ve come a long ways, we’ve come so far, but we’ve got way, way further to go.”

He also said they’re always trying to get City Council to get in a wheel chair and roll around.

“You open your eyes to a lot of places, you step over barriers but you try to wheel over them, you get frustrated,” he said.

“We could go on for an hour about what problems we find.”

The Advisory Committee on Accessibility met four times in 2023.
