Regional District of Fraser-Fort George residents to have fewer recycling options

Rural residents who live outside of Prince George city limits will have to drive a little further to drop off their recycling.

As of May 31st, the contractor who currently provides the recycling drop off bins and hauling services at transfer stations within the Regional District of Fraser Fort-George is calling it quits, leading to a temporary service disruption.

However, those living in outlying areas will still be able to drop off their recycling at the PG Return It Centres located on Vance Road and in the Hart.

Director of External Relations, Renee McCloskey told MyPGNow.com it’s a fluid situation that is less than ideal.

“We recognize that this is far from ideal. For over 30 years, we have been advocating and encouraging residents to recycle along with all of the benefits that come with that and, with this position of a service disruption, we understand the feeling of residents impacted.”

However, she mentioned, it is likely the two Prince George locations are already being used for those who live out of town.

“Many may be utilizing those facilities already as those sites also do the beverage recycling. If they are already taking bottles into Vance Road for example, then they should start bringing their blue bins as well so they can be collected at that location.”

The RDFFG board has approved an agreement with Recycle BC to create collection depots at the Mackenzie, Quinn Street (PG) and, Valemount transfer stations, which are expected to be operational by early fall.

Once these facilities do open, McCloskey noted the items accepted for collection will be expanded.

“They are going to be able to accept glass containers, plastic films like your sandwhich bags, your plastic wrap as well as certain styrofoams.”

Prince George residents will not be impacted by this change as a curbside recycling service is already in place.
