Researchers seek local knowledge on salmon decline

The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries will be in Prince George next week to try and gain local insight into the province’s declining salmon population.

“The need to improve understanding of the causes of the declines, and to develop effective approaches to restoring salmon abundance and sustainable fisheries has become critical,” UBC’s web page on the project says. “Although there has been considerable research into the causes of these declines, as well as large reductions in fishing effort to compensate, the declines continue.”

These researchers will be in Prince George on Tuesday morning (May 7) at the House of Ancestors between 9:00 and 12:00, and hope that experts and others join them to share their knowledge and views on salmon restoration.

Prince George is one of 14 stops across the province the researchers are making.

UBC’s website states “The Project’s main objective is to gather local knowledge from communities and salmon scientists with the goal of more effectively rebuilding Pacific salmon production and to support governments, industry, and BC peoples to better prepared for the future.”

You can learn more about the project and share your written feedback here.
