Abandoned pregnant horse found by SPCA on Fort St. John logging road

A pregnant horse, Spirit, has been rehabilitated after being found on the side of the road in Fort St. John.

She was found 10 kilometers down a logging road on June 28th with lesions all over her skin, especially on her chest. There was evidence that someone had unsuccessfully attempted to treat her condition.

According to the SPCA, a conservation officer found Spirit and notified them about her.

A foster picked Spirit up, got her in a trailer and took her to the vet.

“It was apparent that whatever treatment Spirit had been receiving was not sufficient,” said Christy King, the BC SPCA’s interim program manager for farm and equine animal care services.

“Once the appropriate topical medication and oral antibiotics were prescribed it was amazing how quickly her skin started to clear up. She is looking so much healthier now. It did not hurt that she was being fed and watered regularly and she was able to rest comfortably.”

Exactly one month after she was taken into the SPCA’s care, Spirit gave birth to Journey – who will be up for adoption once she is weaned.

The foster that has been caring for Spirit since she was discovered has decided to adopt her full-time.
