Prince George’s annual Sunflower Festival begins today

The Northern Lights Estate Winery’s third annual Sunflower Festival opens today (Thursday).

Northern Lights Estate Winery Owner and Operator Doug Bell told My PG Now this year’s event will be the “best yet.”

“There is about an acre of sunflowers and 12 different features that are great for taking photos,” Bell said. “There is a kids’ playground by the cafe, you can feed goats, there will be a llama, cow, tons of chickens, ducks, bunnies.”

Hosted at Foreman Farms, about a 15-minute drive from downtown PG, this year’s festival will also have a small zipline and a duck racing game.

Special events and live music will be hosted on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the month the festival grounds are open.

Bell said over 5,000 people explored the fest last year, many from out of town, and that he expects that number to climb this season.

The festival will be open from today until early September, but Bell recommends people not wait too long to experience it.

“The flowers will only bloom for a certain amount of time. For the best blooms, make sure you come early and get the best opportunities for photos,” he said.
