Hinsche, Plummer propel T-Wolves WSOC to gritty victory against UBCO

Brityn Hinsche picked a perfect time to return to the lineup for the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team.

The third-year goalkeeper from Williams Lake turned aside 14 UBC Okanagan Heat shots on Sunday en route to a 1-0 win.

Hinsche’s first real test didn’t come until the 23rd minute when Eleni Georgacacos had a decent look from the right side of the penalty area. But Hinsche calmly dove to her right and swallowed up the shot.

Her best of the day came in the 72nd minute when she stonewalled UBCO’s Alyssa Scott who had a clean look.

Blake Plummer scored the game winner in the 74th minute re-directing a Kjera Hayman shot past Heat netminder Talia Gagnon to help the T-Wolves improve to 1-3-0 on the Canada West season.

For Hinsche it was her third career clean sheet.

On Friday, the Timberwolves lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the Thomspon Rivers Wolfpack.

UNBC led for over half of the game as Kate Rattee perfect header courtesy of a Alysa LeClerc strike got past Cassandra De Amaral for a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Wolfpack head coach Mark Pennington made several substitutions at halftime, which proved key down the stretch – the most crucial was the insertion of Spohia Brandby.

Brandby accepted a pass from Ainsley Grether to even the score in the 52nd minute.

Twenty-four minutes later, Berea Woldeyes cashed in on a laser shot from 35-yards away that found its way under the bar past T-Wolves goalkeeper Lauren Gubbels to put TRU ahead for good.

Thompson Rivers outshot UNBC 18-3 overall.

In men’s action, UNBC (0-6-2) dropped a pair of decisions falling 6-2 to the Calgary Dinos (3-1-2) (Friday) followed by a 4-1 defeat against the MacEwan Griffins (2-3-1).

The Dinos pounded the youthful Timberwolves into submission in the first half rippling the onion bag three times in the opening 40-minutes, courtesy of Joey Plenzik, Owen Antoniuk and Jacob Hunter.

T-Wolves head coach pulled goalkeeper Logan Pierce at halftime and inserted local product Yanni Ntapas.

Both schools traded five goals in the second half as Soliman Aria, Antoniuk and, Milan Ponjevic found the back of the net for Calgary while Luke Graham and Anton Zadonsky replied for UNBC.

On Sunday, a two-goal, two-assist effort from Chance Carter was the difference in the Girffins 4-1 victory over UNBC.

MacEwan led 2-0 at halftime following a pair of markers from Ali Yildiz and Rakan Yassin.

Isaac Tate gave the Timberwolves a glimmer of hope in the 63rd minute as he was tackled inside the box, which led to a penalty kick, which he cashed in on, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum was quickly snatched away as Carter blasted a bullet from 30 yards away past Ntapas that landed under the crossbar.

Carter scored again in the 72nd minute cashing in on a feed from Kayden Dugas.

Next action for the UNBC men is a two-game road trip to the Prairies where they play the Mount Royal Cougars (2-1-4) on Friday followed by a Sunday matinee versus the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-5).

The Timberwolves women’s soccer team hosts Fraser Valley (1-3) on Friday at 6pm from Masich Place Stadium followed by a matchup against Trinity Western (2-0-2) Sunday at noon.
