Annual Take Back the Night march ready to hit PG’s streets

Prince George’s 33rd annual Take Back the Night march will take place tonight (Friday).

It starts from the Canada Games Plaza at 6:30 with a collection of speakers.

Kyla Laferdy, the Team Leader of the Phoenix Transition Society, explained that the event is “to promote living a life free of violence for women… and to honour women who we have lost and women who continue to suffer at the hands of violence.”

She said the continued importance of the event centres around “coming to a place as a society to recognize that it is a fundamental human right to live a life free of violence. The hope is to include men in the process of that and bring solidarity around the recognition of the intricacies of violence.”

The march will depart from Canada Games Plaza at 7:30 and walk to the courthouse where there will be a moment of silence.

Laferdy hopes to see around 200 people attend the event.

There will also be an open mic after event at the Thirty Moose Pub at UNBC for participants who are 19+.
