Impending strike could halt PG mail service by Sunday

If you plan on mailing a package – you might want to do it this week.

Mail service in Prince George as well as the rest of the country could come to a screeching halt as early as Sunday after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers strongly supported a strike mandate.

CUPW Local 812 President, Rick Harris explained to MyPGNow.com what this could mean for residents.

“It’s going to shut down your regular parcel and mail delivery and but some of the cheques will still be delivered. That will be honoured.”

Harris mentioned members are frustrated by the lack of progress and while a work stoppage is far from ideal, getting the right compensation package for its members is key.

“There is some unwillingness for negotiations and that it hasn’t been as fruitful as we would have liked.”

“We don’t want to go out on strike. We all know the way the economy is right now but at the same time, we would like a negotiated contract.”

Issues such as wages, pension and, health and safety of letter carriers are among the concerns shown by the union.

Strike votes took place across Canada between September 9 and October 20

According to a release, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has been bargaining new contracts for its two largest bargaining units – the Urban Operations unit and the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) unit – for almost a year.
