Justin Trudeau’s unwillingness to resign has federal liberals between rock and a hard place: Bond

Justin Trudeau is clearly on the naughty list this Christmas – at least when it comes to his own party, the federal liberals.

The governing Liberals continue to reel following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and housing minister Sean Fraser deciding not to see re-election next fall.

Former Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond told Vista Radio, to make matters worse, the Liberals lost three by-elections this year and have no internal recourse to can their leader.

“The federal liberal party actually has no way to oust a leader. So, it’s going to be up to the Prime Minister to step aside and a lot of Canadians believe as well as a lot of federal liberals believe is that the only hope the party has is he steps aside and they put in the process to elect a new leader.”

“Members of the federal liberal team are seeing the writing on the wall. The question is what is it that Trudeau could even hope to do to restore the confidence within his own party.”

Bond added when the House of Commons re-starts in the New Year, US President Donald Trump will have already been sworn in with possible tariffs staring them in the face.

“We need leadership in Canada in order to deal with that issue and I think it’s going to be a very difficult moment for Justin Trudeau to make the decision. Can he provide the leadership we need as a country and can he even hold his own party together?.”

The latest by-election loss came in Cloverdale-Langley City where Conservative candidate Tamara Jensen received two-thirds of the vote.

Monday’s vote was the 11th federal byelection since the 2021 election.

This year, the Liberals suffered two humiliating defeats when they lost their strongholds of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun (Quebec) and Toronto-St. Paul’s to the Bloc Québécois and the Conservatives.
