Spruce Kings overage blueliner heading south to play college hockey

From Prince George to Tennessee, Trent Ballentyne is in store for another major move this fall.

The Prince George Spruce Kings 20-year-old defenceman committed to Tennessee State University for the 2025-2026 season.

Ballentyne is currently in his BCHL season, where he has two goals and eight assists in 30 games.

Last season, he put up two goals and six assists in 30 games.

“I’m super excited to be part of Tennessee State University’s inaugural season. I’m grateful for the opportunity that Coach Abercrombie has presented me with and I can’t wait to get started next year,” said Ballentyne.

Tennessee State University will become the first historically black college or university (HBCU) to offer men’s hockey at the collegiate level. Founded in 1912 and located in Nashville, Tennessee, the university collaborated with the NHL and Nashville Predators in an unprecedented partnership.

PG is back in action Friday (7pm) and Saturday (6pm) against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs from the Kopar Memorial Arena.

Local products and Cariboo Cougar grads Brady and Kenyon McIsaac both play for the Bulldogs.
